Etsy Love: Beachy Burlap

I am a big fan of Etsy. If you haven't been there already and you love shopping online for home wares and pretty things, go there now!!

It's a place where an international community of creative people get together to sell their handmade art, jewellery, home wares and soo much more! I could browse there for hours (and sometimes do)!

Create your own profile and 'favourite' items and stores to keep up to date with their newest creations. So far I have purchased art prints, photography and more recently a super cute burlap pillow for my spare bedroom. Which brings me to my next point...

I recently stumbled across this lovely Etsy shop called 'The Nest'. It's owned by Samantha who lives all the way over in the UK - Wales to be exact - though she ships worldwide. She cleverly hand-makes pillows and pillow covers using natural burlap, which she then prints with anything from stars and stripes, french typography and animal motifs. Just my style!

Here are some of my current favourites...

Aren't they just the perfect accessory for a beachy home?! I can't wait till mine arrives in the post!! :)

Happy Shopping!

To Do List Update and a Rescue Dog

So I've finally gotten around to updating my living room to-do list and we're this close to being finished with it all, it's taken forever but here's how we're looking:
  • Clear room and remove all fittings
  • Sell current under-sized bookcase
  • Get wallpaper removed and walls skimmed
  • Prep walls for painting
  • Order new blinds for sliding door
  • Order new Bookcase
  • Paint walls
  • Wash windows and doors, deep clean the carpet and sofa
  • Hang blinds
  • Frame and hang seaside botanical prints from Etsy
  • Purchase suitable ottoman for entry way
  • Purchase or make suitable art for space above couch
  • Hang art (one last item to go!) and coat rack
  • Build a long and narrow lamp table to go behind back of sofa (project on hold...for now)
  • Purchase two new table lamps (we ended up going for one floor lamp instead as we're not building the table for now)
  • Style our new living room!
So you can see how very close we are to completion!
My last piece of art arrived last week but I haven't had time to take it to the framers yet and this weekend will be a  bit manic so it may be next weekend before it's done BUT I promise you there will finally be pictures of our new living room in the next two weeks! I can't wait to show you what I've been upto.

In other exciting news my husband and I are possibly becoming foster 'parents' to a rescue dog desperately in need of a place to stay! :)
In case you don't know, we already have an 18 month old Golden Retriever named Nala and a cat named Luca - I'm quite the animal-nut!

Here's my golden-girl, Nala...

12 weeks old (a butterball of fluff)...

...and 1 year later
(I still can't believe how fast she grew!)
Since our Nala is a registered Golden Retriever we are members of the GRC (Golden Retriever Club) run through the NZ Kennel Club and through them we have come into contact with the Golden Retriever Rescue organization.
How it works is that Goldens of any background in need of rehoming are referred to them either through breeders, pet owners, the RSCPA, local animal shelters or the pound. In most cases the dogs are surrendered by loving owners who must sadly give them up due to unforseen circumstances and in the event that the owners are unknown, unable or unwilling to care for them as they wait for adoption, they are put into volunteer foster homes.
We had thought about the possibility of becoming a 'foster family' since Nala was a young pup, we have the resources to help, along with an easy going and sociable pup who might enjoy the company of other dogs from time to time and just last week I heard through the club that a lovely 9 year old, female, Golden Retriever needed to find a home before the month was up - foster or adoption. So we put ourselves forward to foster her in case no adoptive home is found.
In preparation, the dogs will be meeting this Sunday in neutral territory to see how they interact and if all goes well we could be bringing her home with us at the end of the month! I'm excited about the prospect of being able to help, but a little worried about how well our pup will cope with another dog in her home. We'll be doing our very best to make it a smooth transition for them both!

So along with the usual house things, that's what's been going on over here! Very exciting!
I'll be back with foster-dog pictures after the weekend meet-up. We can't wait to meet her, show her some love and hopefully help her find her forever home! :)

Nautical Southampton Home

This beautiful nautical-inspired Southampton home is proudly owned by Scott Currie, the vice president of global communications for Elie Tahari. He tells Elle Decor how his love for all things nautical began as a child (as it did for so many of us!) with idyllic childhood summers by the sea. It's nice to see how Scott's long-held nautical love affair has made for an interesting and inspiring coastal home.
Let's take a look...

Pretty shingles, a deep blue pool, manicured gardens and white columned
pool house - lovely!

A charming outdoor spot - love the iron lanterns!

A welcoming entry hall...

A fun and funky Study...

I love the warm tones here...

Such a sweet kitchen...

The nautical and masculine master bedroom...

Simple and fresh in the master bath...

This is a fun space! Love the driftwood lamp and fishing float!

Such a bright and happy living area!
This Hampton's home definitely inspires me to create my own little slice of Southampton paradise! :)

Island Style

India Hicks, daughter of the great interior designer David Hicks, is talented designer in her own right. Her colonial 'island style' really appeals to me and never more so than in this stunning but simple 2000sq foot studio style home nicknamed 'The 'Cricket Pavilion'. This little piece of magic is even available to rent if you're ever holidaying in the beautiful Bahamas...we can dream right?! :)

Here's the gorgeous colonial beach house...

A Union Jack pillow speaks of India's British connection...

A peaceful outdoor dining spot...

Loving the green of the palms in this simple kitchen...

White in every room keeps things fresh...

Pretty textiles in the bedrooms...

Simple and functional amenities in the bathroom complete the 'on-holiday' look...

Couldn't you just imagine spending a relaxing week (or two!) in this peaceful island home?? Pure bliss! Right, I'm off to get my airline tickets! ;)

Statement Lighting

I am a self confessed lighting-aholic. One of the very first changes I ever made to our house was to install new lighting pretty much everywhere. I recently decided that since I'm now at the point of redecorating most of the house, some reassessing of whether my original lighting choices should stay or go is in order!

To gather some ideas I've been browsing a few stores on-line and one option I'm currently loving is this eco-friendly, white bamboo pendant, perfect for making a coastal statement...

Satori Pendant in White

A great option to hang low over a dining table or in a high-ceilinged living area AND you can get it for 25% off right now at Lighting Plus, at less than $200 it's a reasonably budget friendly option too!
If I was to dream a little more (and I do love to dream) I would just love one of these iconic David Trubridge Coral pendants to put pretty much anywhere in my home...

David Trubridge Coral Pendant

Ifn case you haven't heard of him yet, David Trubridge is a hugely talented  New Zealand designer (he arrived in NZ from Britain in 1985 - by sailboat!) whose spectacular range of eco-friendly furniture and lighting can now be found internationally - to see more David Trubridge designed furniture and homewares you can check out his website here.

A selection of David Trubridge designs...

So beautiful!

Isn't the play of light on the walls that these pendants give off just amazing?!
I've seen them in both commercial and residential spaces here in NZ and they are truly statement makers! If I had the ceiling height to accommodate one I think I'd definitely have to go for the largest pendant (with it's 1 meter diameter)!

So while I'm all for budget friendly options at home (and will most likely go for the Satori pendant for this reason!) I do think the David Trubridge Coral pendant is well worth the investment! It's not often you find a slice of modern design with a clean, simple and versatile form that fits in perfectly with a coastal aesthetic!

Wouldn't you just love to see one of these amazing pendants in a beach house somewhere?? I think it would be a-mazing!

A Spot of Retail Therapy

I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend and that all the lovely Mum's got spoilt for Mother's Day!! Aside from a lovely relaxing  Mother's Day dinner with the family on Sunday we had another full on weekend! It seems like there have been a few of those here lately but we have made some plans to kick up our heels and enjoy a date night this coming weekend! :)

Our weekend began early on Saturday morning with me wanting to go to the lighting store to look at some lamp options for our living room. And of course I happened to mention to the Hubby that one of the lighting stores was, in fact close to a Freedom Furniture store and then I might have mentioned that maybe we should go to that one ;) (My husband being such a good sport agreed, and yes, he does know exactly how crazy I am about that place and that I rarely come out of there spending less than $100  - I actually spent $110 this time) - oops!

We headed off and decided to check out the lighting shop first (just in case!) and although there was a 40% discount off lamp shades nothing was jumping out at me - isn't that always the way!? So off to Freedom we went (I probably skipped there haha) and voila! there were a few serious contenders...that store never lets me down!

So what did I end up buying at the store of my dreams?? I bought a lovely white textured lamp shade for the floor lamp that will be going in the living room (I'm still waiting on the base to arrive so I can't show you that yet unfortunately) and I also got a lovely blue throw that goes perfectly with my new throw pillows on the sofa.

I will admit, I didn't need it, but it was love at first sight! That darn throw just ticked all the boxes - blue, warm, snuggly and perfect for the upcoming winter...

The lovely 'Hampton's throw' by Freedom

Sooo soft...

Doesn't it match my blue throw pillows? It was meant to be ;)

There were some other things that made me happy this weekend too...

..like my pretty Daisies. They've lasted two weeks so far!

...and having our spare bedroom back in order is lovely too! I had used it as a bit of a dumping ground during our living room makeover and it's so nice to see it back to normal, not a completed room but it's coming along...

I love that little black silk lamp and the textured wallpaper
that we hung last spring...

I also loved that I found a nice, new spot for my crystal floor lamp!
It was one of the first special items I bought for our home almost 3 years ago. It wasn't quite right for the living room anymore but I couldn't let it go...

..and it's perfect next to the bed in the spare room!

So what did everyone else get up to this past weekend? Any new finds??
Maybe you got a fabulous home-related Mother's Day gift? I'm totally jealous if you did! ;)

May Wishlist

So the Autumn Freedom Furniture catalogue has arrived in my mailbox and as usual I've found that there are tons of things that I just have to have! (These homeware catalogues are dangerous!) ;)

I will admit that I'm terrible when it comes to this particular store, I just love it, it's like my version of IKEA or Pottery Barn (we don't have either in NZ but if we did I'd be all over them like a rash!). For those who haven't seen a Freedom store before it's a chain of homeware stores in NZ and Australia that sells everything from indoor and outdoor furniture to coordinated home decor, tableware, lighting and more. I could literally spend hours browsing the layout and room designs throughout the store, it's my idea of heaven!

So let's check out some of my picks for the season. I narrowed it down to decor items only, so here are my Autumn favourites from Freedom...

A delicately textured storm-blue vase...

An antique globe, perfect for the home office!

How fabulous is this boat oar!?
I can just see it hanging from the wall...

...along with this weathered clock...

This canvas would suit a modern beach house,
love the pretty blues and purples...

Check out this cute porthole mirror!

This reminds me of the inside of a sea shell,
perfect for a coastal bathroom...

Love the cheap and chic beach art...

...and the perfect coastal tablecloth

Over in the lighting department I am in lust with these
capiz shell lamp shades...

..they come in three different sizes in silver or gold...I want, I want!

So those are my Autumn decor picks from Freedom! Which are your favourites? Do you agree the capiz pendant shades are fabulous?! I'm desperate to bring one home with me, I can see one sitting on top of a floor lamp in my living room very soon... ;)
